Introduction

The most critical factor in stair design is the relationship between the rise (riser) and run (tread). A unit rise of 7 inches to 7 5/8 inches high with an appropriate tread will combine both comfort and safety. Although you will often find service stairs steeper, the riser should not exceed 8 inches. To make the stairs steeper, increase the rise and shorten the run (see Figure 2-37 ).
