What is Free-Ed.Net?

Free-Ed.Net is an aggregator of educational resources that are available — free of any cost — on the Internet. It uses the metaphor of a university to organize the content into colleges, departments, and programs of study.  Resources are selected for their quality, relevance, and their potential contribution to the overall mission of the project.  All materials are offered to a worldwide audience of learners for no cost. Expenses of the project are covered, as least in part, by donations and revenue from click-through advertising.

David L. Heiserman, an educator, author, and educational software developer launched Free-Ed.Net from his home office in 1997.  The mission then, as now, is to offer quality free education on the Internet for a global audience. The project has grown in size and complexity with the corresponding growth of education on the Internet. Beginning with a few modest mathematics and technical subjects (some prepared by Heiserman, himself), the project has grown to more than 300 courses and resources that reflect the career and academic needs of the new century.

In April, 2009, Free-Ed.Net opened a virtual campus in Second Life®. In this 3-dimensional, social platform, the university metaphor takes a leap upward toward  a colorful and exciting environment that is representative of a real-life university campus. On this InWorld campus, traditional flat pages and hyperlinks are replaced with buildings, sidewalks, parks, recreational areas and, most important, real-time encounters with avatars belonging to very real people. Participation is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged.
